25 Jahre Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig
More than a festival
It’s been 25 years since the first Wave-Gotik-Treffen and I have been part of it for more than a century now, as a visitor and – more recently – taking pictures as well. The WGT has evolved from underground festival to an event of a grander scale. The “Treffen” is taking over the complete city for five days instead of being confined to a certain area. You can visit concerts, plays, exhibitions, movies, readings, even cemetery tours or knitting courses and for sure you can party till dawn. There is so much on the menu that you will never be able to see even half of it. And with more than 22 000 people visiting, it can get a bit crowded in some venues. First and foremost the WGT means meeting your friends and having fun, but also getting to know new ones as people are gathering from all over the world. This is what the term “Treffen” means. And here it’s particularly easy to make new acquaintances as visitors are friendly, peaceful and, of course, also part of the darker side like oneself. The inhabitants of Leipzig, where the WGT has been taking place for all these years each Whitsun break, might have been wary at first but quickly learned that there is nothing to fear but a lot to watch even for outsiders. By taking pictures at the WGT I want to show others what I see in it: it’s about the people, their creative and individual ways, encouraging acceptance and respect for the gothic subculture.
